Major Features
of Airspan
Airspan provides an innovative, flexible and cost-effective means to deploy radio in the local access network. The system uses revolutionary "DS-CDMA" radio technology to enable the support of fully transparent 64kbit/s based services. Designed to provide wide-area coverage, the system operates over the distances up 25 km (Line of Sight). Airspan may be deployed in a number of ways. Islands of coverage can be migrated to full "Cellular Style" deployment, reusing frequencies on a N=1 to N=3 basis depending on antenna and cell configuration. System Architecture The Airspan architecture consists of a number of sub-systems. At the heart of the system is the "Central Terminal." The Central Terminal is Airspan's radio base station and provides radio borne access circuits for the "Subscriber Terminals." Different Subscriber Terminals are deployed at the end-user's location depending on the type of service to be provided. Four types of ST are available; Single, Dual and Four Line Analogue Telephony, 128kbit/s Digital Leased Line, Basic Rate ISDN and the Multiline Analogue Telephony. Subscriber Terminals consist of a compact, unobtrusive radio unit which is mounted externally at the subscribers' premises, a drop cable which connects the radio unit to an internal power source and the network termination unit, or master socket, that supports standard fixed network phones, faxes and modems. The radio unit includes an integrated flat-plate antenna and can be installed/ maintained without any specialist radio knowledge. The Access Concentrator is the sub-system used to provide flexible interfacing to the host switching network. Access Interfaces supported include 2-Wire VF, 2Mbit/s G.703 with CAS in TS16, DASS2, DSS1, V5.1 or V5.2 signalling schemes. Airspan can be managed using a combination of craft terminals (known as site controllers), Sitespan™ and/or a TMN (M.3010) Element Manager (SMP), which can provide a full "Q3" interface to higher layers of management. System Benefits Airspan may be deployed either stand-alone or in conjunction with other access technologies. The system is designed to:
