I am in the United States, trying to buy a Portable Fax Machine. I am a ATT/Cingular Customer.
Why are you suggesting I have to buy two (2) units?

Goodbye Analog Cellular Service in the USA, Sunset February 2008 Read more here
Well, strictly speaking, you don't have to get two Greta, but you will have to create your own private network, like Base Office Dispatcher to Drivers in the field, this is a closed-loop.
For a long time, Analog lines made it easier. Fax technology is sound (like two machines 'talking' or 'handshaking' you can hear a sound, therefore analog not digital. A simple adapter to your Cell and you could use it as a phone or connect a Fax or Card Reader.
Then, when digital came along via Nextel, ATT/Cingular and T-Mobile, the connection was handled by the service provider/system operator, with a service option called CSD, or Circuit Switched Data. Some charged $10 a month, some none. What it did was give you a separate phone than the fax number and they handled the [digital--->analog--->digital connection].
Now, in the USA, ATT/Cingular's CSD circuits are turned off, and the only way for a Greta tm to send a Fax is from Greta to Greta (not to or from a regular Fax plugged in the normal wall jack) or to a Cellular Terminal with a normal Fax Machine plugged in. This is more secure though, as digital to digital is difficult to tap.
If you are using a Laptop Computer, you could combine the Greta and:
Create document on your PC or Laptop
Print it out via Laptop to Greta
Sign and Scan back in via Greta to Laptop
Send eFax as attachment via email. (Assumes you have a Internet connection, like a hotel room, or WiFi, or a Wireless Cellular Modem)

If you purchase a Cellular Terminal (Fixed Wireless Terminal) for ATT/Cingular:

You could plug in your regular office fax to the terminal (shown above)
You can still have it plugged in the wall, with a $2.00 splitter from Radio Shack (we can provide)
Call your Greta or Cellular Terminal in the field. They will handshake as it is still two digital devices communicating. One exception is that they must be on the same network (Cingular to Cingular)
Cellular Terminals FCC approved for the USA: Please note that Cingular is 850/1900mhz and Tmobile is 1900mhz
Ericsson G32 $595.00 2N Tel. Easygate $395.00 Telular SX5 $595.00

You could go All Digital and combine a Handheld PC (PDA) & Wireless Bluetooth Printer
For this idea to work, you need to understand some PC basics, as this solution is not for the PC illiterate or easily frustrated. It does work, fine, swell, it can be tedious. Not all documents to a PDA can be opened. A few are exceptional like HTC, Compaq and iMate. If they can not open a 'PDF, GIF or JPG' they are virtually useless. Remember, once open, you have to have a screen large enough to actually see the document.
Then you would either- view, reply and send
view, discard, delete
view & print
