For those in the know, running your calls through the Internet can reduce costs and increase privacy. By creating a Phone Jack (called an "RJ-11", not that you care), off your Computer USB Port, and accessing the Internet by one of many means from "Broadcast WiFi", to Router WiFi(which can tend to be choppy), to Cable Modem to 4G Cellular Modem, to a 2G/3G Cellular Modem (like PhonecellSX) you have a Phone Line and phone number wherever you can take your Notebook or Netbook.
You can run Skype and others VoIP Solutions off your Tablet or PDA and that can be sufficient for a Fixed-Line (Wireline) alternative, assuming you don't need Mobile Faxing (except eFax).
But, "at the end of the day" (Brits love to say this,-even at 7am),there is no substitute for having a regular phone jack to plug in the traditional world of analogue devices.
